No new rail zone for AP, SCR to be split into 2
Hyderabad,Feb 23, 2015: The Centre has reportedly decided to split the SCR headquarters into two zones for AP and Telangana instead of creating a new railway zone for Andhra Pradesh to meet the commitment made during the bifurcation.
As per the bifurcation commitment, Railway Ministry is supposed to create a new railway zone for AP to cater to the development of railways in AP. But an expert committee has opposed setting up new railway zone either at ViZag or Vijayawada saying it would not be feasible.
As a result, Railway Ministry has decided to bifurcate the present South Central Railway into Zone 1 and Zone 2 respectively for Telangana and AP with the headquarters of the two zones being located at Secunderabad only.
While the SCR Zone 1 will look after the divisions of Hyderabad, Secunderabad, Nanded and Telangana, SCR Zone 2 will look after AP, Guntur, Guntakal and Vijayawada divisions. There will be no shifting of the staff and they will continue to work from their present location at Secunderabad.
