'HYDRA' Established to Prevent Encroachments on Lakes: Commissioner A.V. Ranganath

Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Monitoring and Protection Agency (HYDRA) Commissioner A.V. Ranganath emphasized that the demolition of illegal constructions on government lands, lakes, and water bodies will be strictly enforced, regardless of who is responsible. He expressed concern that nearly 66% of the lakes in Hyderabad have already been encroached upon, and if this continues unchecked, there might be no lakes left within the city in the next few years.

In an interview, Ranganath clarified that HYDRA's role is not limited to demolitions but also involves protecting the city from natural disasters and responding swiftly during emergencies to save lives. He mentioned that they are working with local communities to protect government lands.

Ranganath stated that HYDRA was established by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy with the goal of preventing encroachments on lakes within the Hyderabad city limits. He explained that they are taking steps to protect the existing lakes while gradually reclaiming those that were previously encroached upon. He noted that due to the high value of land, some political leaders and corrupt officials are aiding encroachers by accepting bribes.

Ranganath highlighted that a common practice involves setting up temporary shelters for the poor on government land, only to evict them later in exchange for money, allowing the encroachers to take over and develop the land. To effectively combat such practices, CM Revanth Reddy has promised to establish a special police station for their support.

Ranganath reiterated that any illegal constructions on government land will be demolished, regardless of who is behind them. He advised the public not to purchase properties on encroached lands, warning that they could face the loss of their homes.

He also pointed out that houses built on encroached lake beds are at risk of flooding during the monsoon season. Ranganath assured that HYDRA will not spare anyone, whether they are ordinary citizens or influential leaders, in its efforts to restore previously encroached lakes.
