Opposition Status Controversy: Jagan's Appeal to Assembly Speaker

Former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy wrote a letter to the AP Assembly Speaker Ayannapatrudu expressing his objection to the manner in which the MLAs' oath-taking ceremony was conducted in the AP Assembly. He criticized the decision to make him take the oath after the Chief Minister and the ministers.

Jagan questioned whether the decision to deny his party the status of the opposition was predetermined. He stated that making him take the oath after the Chief Minister and ministers violates Assembly rules.

In his letter, YS Jagan mentioned that the law clearly states that the opposition status should be given to the party with the most seats in the opposition, and not necessarily requiring 10% of the seats as mentioned nowhere in the law.

He accused the ruling coalition government and the Speaker of acting with hostility towards his party. Jagan highlighted that videos of the Speaker speaking aggressively, saying they should be beaten till death, have gone viral, creating an environment where his party members feel they cannot speak freely in the Assembly.

Jagan requested the Speaker to reconsider their decision on the opposition status as having this status is essential for lawful participation in Assembly activities.
