Elephants on rampage , crush forest guard to death in Chittor district

Chittor, Dec 18: In an unfortunate incident, a herd of elephants have gone berserk and crushed to death a forest employee in Chittor district on Thursday. Muniappa, posted at Naniyala forest area to protect people and crops from being mauled by elephants, was crushed to death by an irate mob of elephants when he tried to drive them away. The incident came as a rude shock to the villagers and forest officials who have been trying in vain for the past several months to control the elephants. It has become a daily affair for the elephants to attack villages and go on a rampage destroying crops in several forest areas of the district, especially in the Tamil Nadu boarder areas. The villagers are in a grip of fear as they are unable to face the elephant raids and not knowing what to do over the issue. Forest officials are also trying their best to control the elephant raids but all their efforts are going down the drain. It is to be seen what steps the Government will take now to control the elephant terror in the district.
