70 pvt engineering colleges to shut down in Telangana
Hyderabad, Dec 13: Of the 174 private engineering colleges that were denied affiliation by Jawaharlal Nehru Technology University (JNTU) Hyderabad before 2014 EAMCET counselling at least 70 of them are on the verge of closure, acording to sources in JNTU-H.
Earlier, the colleges had approached the Supreme Court against the decision of JNTU-H, sources said.
It may be recalled that on the orders of the court, JNTU-H has appointed an experts committee comprising faculty from institutions like BITS Pilani (Hyderabad campus), IIT Hyderabad, Osmania University and some polytechnic colleges, sources explained.
The members of the committee were mandated to inspect 164 of the 174 colleges and submit their report to the Supreme Court by December 31, 2014. However, even before the inspections began, 10 colleges downed their shutters on their own, according to the sources.
Of the balance 164 colleges, managements of some of them refused to allow the inspection committee members to enter their campuses. While, managements of sdome of the colleges borrowed faculty members from other institutions during the inspections, sources said.
The inspections are over and the JNTU-H is consolidating the data submitted by the committee members, sources explained.
Following the inspections, at least 70 engineering colleges have volunteered to close down operations and therefore they approached the state government to ensure the transfer of students who were admitted during the special phase of Eamcet counselling that was permitted by the Supreme Court, sourced added.
