Modi meets Myanmar’s pro-democracy icon Suu Kyi

Nay Pyi Taw, Nov 12: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday met with Nobel laureate and Myanmar’s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. This is his first interaction with the pro-democracy icon. The meeting here, came on a day when he had a string of bilateral meetings with world leaders and participated in the 12th India-ASEAN summit. Myanmar is in the middle of a national debate on whether to allow Suu Kyi, Chairperson and General Secretary of the National League for Democracy, to contest the 2015 parliamentary elections. At. present, she is barred from contesting the elections due to a provision in the Constitution. Ms. Suu Kyi had visited India in November 2012. She gad spent several years in India during her early days when her mother, Daw Khin Yi, was the Ambassador to India. She studied at Lady Shriram College in Delhi.
