No open defecation in 7 districts by March 31: CS tells Collectors
Hyderabad, Jan.19 : Seven districts in Telangana State will become free from “open defecation” by March 31 this year, Chief Secretary SP Singh has said. He directed the district collectors to take required measures in this direction by involving people in a big way. Along with Union Drinking water and sanitation Secretary Parameshwaran, SP Singh held a video conference at Secretariat here.
Speaking on the occasion he instructed the Collectors to complete the target of constructing adequate number of individual toilets. As Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao is for transforming Telangana into a state that is free from open defecation problem by October 2, 2018, SP Singh asked the Collectors to monitor regularly the program. Singh asked the collectors to get donations from voluntary organizations and loans from Stree Nidhi scheme. On pilot basis seven districts will achieve the target by Mar 31 with active participation of people this year he said.
He appealed to Parameshwaran to provide necessary funding under Swatch Bharath Mission to reach the goal of making the state free from open defecation. Of 44,84,446 families in the stat only 20,10,803 houses have toilets and the rest of 25,25,230 houses do not. Against 8695 village panchayats 1387 achieved ODF and Singh appreciated the collectors for progress in works. He also asked them to see that water and sanitation committees and Sarpanches are involved in the process by creating awareness among people.
Parameshwaran appreciated that Telangana government achieved better results in Swatch Bharat Mission. He advised other states to replicate and study the Telangana practice of solid and liquid waste management. The central officer instructed the collectors to address field level problems, maintain quality in construction of toilets and ensure that they are used properly and transfer directly the subsidy amount into the bank accounts to the beneficiaries.
