42 Congress MLAs resign

In view of Supreme Court verdict on Sutlej Yamuna Link(SYL) land bill 42 Congress party MLAs tendered their resignations as protest. Yesterday SC struck down the Sutlej-Yamuna Land Bill and termed it as 'Unwarranted'. As the election going to be scheduled in few months all political parties Strategizing to reap the benifits from this issue. Today, Congress MLAs lead by Leader of Opposition Charanjit Singh Channi met Punjab Assembly Secretary and submitted their resignations. State Congress supremo Cap.Amarinder Singh launched criticism on CM Prakash Singh Badal allegeing that Chief Minister has categorically 'failed to protect the State's interest'. He announced a massive rally which would be taken on Sunday as a token of protest. Amarinder gave a call to party cader to burn the Govt. effigies, which miserably failed to protect the people's interest. SYL is a 214 km long canal proposed to connect Sutlej and Yamuna in 1966. It defines water sharing between Haryana and Punjab. In 1990, Construction of the canal has been halted due to the spread of Punjab's militancy. In 2002 Supreme Court ordered Punjab Government to complete the project. In reaction, Punjab Assembly passed "Termination of Agreement Act 2004" which triggered the controversy. Haryana termed it as unconstitutional and immoral.In March, 2016 on the Presidential reference Supreme Court once again taken up the issue for hearing and ordered Pubjab Government to dig SYL canal. As the elections are nearing, to rouse the peoples' sentiments SAD(Shiromani Akali Dal) Govt passed most controversial "Punjab Satluj Yamuna Link Canal Land (Transfer of Proprietary Rights) Bill, 2016" which proposes to re-vest property rts to the owners whose land was acquired to build SYL canal free of cost. On Thursday, a five member constitutional bench headed by Just. A R Dave pronounced its judgement stating that the law passed by Punjab in 2004 to terminate SYL canal water sharing agreement was unconstitutional. All political parties calculating permutations and combinations in order to gain the poll benefits. After observing the trends CM Badal quickly reacted to call an emergency assembly session on 16th November, followed by meeting President Pranab on this issue. To counter congress game plan SAD announced ‘Paani Bachao, Punjab Bachao’ campaign which will be launched on December 8th. On the recent verdict CM Badal said “Satluj is our lifeline. We are not able to live without it. Many Wells are drying up, at now canal water is also very deficient. To save Punjab as well as country,no water should be taken out from Punjab”
