Police resort to lathicharge on HCU: Students being dragged out

The police resorted to a lathicharge in the Hyderabad Central University campus as students who were being driven out of the campus tried to come back and indulged in heavy stone throwing at the police on Tuesday evening. One constable was seriously injured in the head. There was pushing and shoving on the campus between the police and the students. Images show the police dragging the students away. Women constables tried to draw girl students away. The HCU, which erupted into violence since Tuesday morning following the return of Vice-Chancellor Apparao, lapsed into large-scale violence. The students went on the rampage destroying furniture. The students alleged that they had not been told about the Vice-Chancellor's return. They gathered in the morning at the meeting hall where the Vice-Chancellor was talking with Senior Professors. They alleged that the Vice-Chancellor returned to the campus before three months passed because otherwise he would lose the job. The vice-Chancellor had gone on leave owing to tension following the suicide by research scholar Rohith Vemula. The police were there in strength. Earlier reports said the Central Rapid Action Force had been deployed on the campus. Apparao meanwhile appealed to the students to calm down, stating there were institutions that would come to their rescue such as the courts.
