JNU Kanhaiya alleges beatings by Patiala lawyers

Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union president Kanhaiya Kumar has told a Supreme Court-appointed lawyers' probe panel that he was beaten, pushed to the ground and injured by men in lawyers' robes before the police, as he was brought to the Patiala House court premises on February 17. "When the police brought me inside the court's gate, a mob of men in lawyers' robes attacked me," he told the panel. Pictures of the incident in the media showed that Kanhaiya's head was being pressed down by the police handling him so he won't be hurt in the stampede . The policeman bringing him in to the court was in plain clothes and was the tallest in the crowd, which showed he was in able hands. The February 9 media reports showed him leading sloganeering on the campus with gay abandon. He was put in the same cell as the convicted traitor Afzal Guru in the Tihar jail in order to give him protection round the clock so he won't hurt himself. The JNU chief is facing charges of sedition for co-ordinating a meeting to eulogise convicted mastermind of the attack on Indian Parliament Afzal Guru on the university campus and raising anti-India slogans.
