SC refuses to entertain Kanhaiya Kumar bail plea

The Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain the petition for bail by Kanhaiya Kumar, Jawaharlal Nehru Students union president, `in the circumstances' in the case of sedition. While not specifying the circumstances, the court asked the petitioners why they had not approached the Delhi High court for the bail, and directly come to the Supreme Court. The Judges, including J. Chalameshwar, had yesterday postponed the hearing on the bail to Friday, even as the lawyers for the petitioner, Soli Sorabjee and Raju Ramachandran, had asked for an immediate disposal of the case. The JNU students union president, who is facing sedition charges for raising slogans and organising a meeting to eulogise rank terrorist Afzal Guru, had been repeatedly attacked by lawyers when he was produced before the Patiala House court in the past 2 days.
