Amma supplies purified water to the poor in Chennai
Purified drinking water would be supplied among the poor in Chennai. It will be supplied at the rate of 20 litres per family.
Called 'Amma Kudineer Thittam' , the new scheme will supply drinking water to those who cannot afford to buy mineral water from private players, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa announced on Saturday.
"The rich and the affluent in Chennai are buying water purified through the reverse osmosis process. It is the desire of the poor and the deprived sections to use that water, too. I have ordered the implementation of a new scheme 'Amma Kudineer Scheme' to fulfil their desire," Ms. Jayalalithaa said in a statement.
In the first phase, 100 places with the majority of poor people would be identified within the Greater Chennai Corporation limits and water supplying points would be established. "About 20 litres of purified water would be supplied a day for a family," she said.
Based on the response received, more supply points would be established and smart cards would be issued to the beneficiaries, she added.
