Dacoits warn judges in UP
All additional judges appointed by the District Judge will have to pay Rs.10 lakh each to them, dacoits have warned in a threat letter sent to the Kanpur District Judge's office. Otherwise, the dacoits said the vehicles of the newly appointed additional judges would be blown up en route.
The newly appointed additional judges were frightened enough. They lodged a complaint with the police.
The district administration has since raised the security for the additional judges. The police have registered a case and are investigating.
Lawlessness in the part of UP is notorious. That the dacoits could dare to blackmail judges who sit over judgement of dacoits and others is a telling comment on the state of affairs in UP. Young Akhilesh Yadav, Chief Minister, is expected to take the matter seriously, and provide for law and order.
Passing on religious strife to the BJP-led NDA maybe one thing, but blaming the Centre for law and order lapses would not be brooked even by those involved in the intolerance debate.
