JNU research scholar raises gut issue, warns suicide

While HCU research scholar Rohith Vemula struggled with abstract issues before committing suicide, a Jawaharlal Nehru University scholar, Madan Mehar, has warned the JNU authorities that if his fellowship issue is not settled he would be following Rohith. The alarmed university authorities have kept a watch on the research scholar, and simultaneously assured him that his gut issue is being looked into. Madan Mehar has alleged that he is facing discrimination and that his PhD programme has been terminated. He has written two letters in this regard and warns that if the issue is not settled within a week, he would commit suicide. Reacting to the warning, alerted Vice-Chancellor H. Sharma said the research scholar had done research in Brussels, Belgium, when he was indebted to the JNU to the extent of Rs.66,000. If the money is paid back, his fellowship could be revived. Owing to the arrears, the JNU finance department had not given the clearance and hence his fellowship was blocked. Telling the university staff to keep a watch on the research scholar, the Vice-Chancellor said the Madan Mehar issue would be settled soon.
