Currency being smuggled out of India

Gold has been smuggled into the country for long. What's going out? It is currency. This became clear on Friday morning when officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence spotted a person with wads of currency notes at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. The passenger was bound for Kuwait. The currency notes were said to be worth Rs.1 crore in all. If the DRI continues to keep checks on outgoing passengers also, it might help tackle the hawala racket, which has been a big bane for the country. Hawala translates into black money. It might be recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had come to power on the singular promise of bringing back monies stashed away in Swiss banks by Indians. The Swiss are tough in not returning monies to the respective countries. Only the US could make the Swiss pay tainted money deposited in Swiss banks by its citizens by acting tougher than the tight-fisted Swiss. India should make similar moves to get back the tainted monies. Indian leaders attend the World Economic Forum meets in Davos regularly, but none makes an attempt at getting back black money stolen away from this country. The BJP must act on its election promise for its own credibility.
