Venkaiah Naidu deplores curbs on Telugu in TN
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Nadu has deplored the curbs imposed by the Tamil Nadu government on the Telugu language study. He pointed out that learning in one's mother tongue in any State is a right given to us by the Constitution.
Releasing the calendar prepared by the Delhi Andhra Association, Venkaiah Naidu noted that the Telugu peoples were forging ahead in all spheres of life. The Telugu Association would be in the forefront of uniting Telugu peoples. The association would be arranging several programmes for the spread of the Telugu language.
It's unfortunate that the Tamil Nadu government has put curbs on the study of Telugu. Historically, the Maratha kings of Thanjavur had propagated Telugu, championed Tyagaraja kritis, and Telugu is written all over the temples in Tamil Nadu. While the compulsions of Tamil Nadu are not known, the State is peopled by migrants from coastal Andhra, who had been living there for centuries. The people are said to speak in Telugu in their homes and revert to Tamil when they come out. At least the mothers make it a point to speak with their first borns in Telugu there.
Kalaignar Karunanidhi, among many other top political leaders, is also stated to be of Telugu origin. His chaste writing in the Tamil language has earned him the honoured title of Kalaignar. At least in honour of Karunanidhi, Telugu should be allowed to flourish in Tamil Nadu.
