Twitter to prevent spam, abuse

Social-media powerhouse Twitter has at last realized the abuse of the platform in an open season situation. Twitter has set down certain rules and sections to prevent the misuse of the platform by vested interests, interested parties and others. For instance, Twitter cautions its users not to use objectionable words; they cannot use crime or violence-related trolls or encourage terrorism. Towards this end, Twitter has started an `Abuse' and `Spam' section, where Twitterati could have their say. If a tweet is aimed at harassing someone or undermining someone's esteem, these would no more be welcome. Expressions of hatred will not be allowed. Twitter has given a long list of abuse. "You should not encourage violence. Comments should not be aimed at hurting somebody's feelings. Comments such as racial, gender biased, religion related, showing someone's personal weaknesses or handicapped status are taboo." Threats to commit suicide or terror attacks should be avoided. Twitter accounts of those who violate the rules may face temporary or permanent closure. Twitter CEO Dick Costolo has written in a memo that he is in fact `ashamed' how Twitter had handled trolls so far. He also said that new comers to Twitter would be counseled on the tweets that they could make or avoid. It was high time that Twitter had acted. Dick in fact quoted a netizen research agency to point out that 73% of the people faced harassment on the social media.
