Delhi to issue 72-hour ultimatum to Pak on Pathankot terror

India has virtually given a 72-hour ultimatum to Pakistan. The ultimatum is expected to be given at the meeting scheduled for Monday between officials of the two governments. The official-level meeting today was aimed at preparing a road map for the foreign secretary level and other talks between the two countries. As of now, there is ambiguity about the ultimatum. The ultimatum is going to demand that Pakistan should take action against Jaish-e-Muhammad terror agency operating from the Pakistani soil for the Pathankot terror attack. New Delhi claims it has solid evidence about Jaishe Muhammad's involvement in the Pathankot terror attack. Although it may be so worded as to confound the ambiguity, is India giving the ultimatum to Pakistan or Islamabad's futile action against Jaish-e-Muhmmad. Pakistan has rarely acted against terror from its soil, making a distinction between good terrorists and bad terrorists. Since it has always treated Jaish and other terror elements as good terrorists, it's unlikely to act against them. The only time it acted against bad terrorists was after the killing of hundreds of children of the Pakistan's three services by Taliban at Peshawar Army School. Even Taliban of the Pakistan variety is good Taliban and bad Taliban is the rare occasion when Afghan Taliban acted in Pakistan. What Delhi is going to convey in the ultimatum is action should be taken against Jaishe elements. Otherwise the foreign secretary-level talks fixed for January 15 are off. If this is worded in such a way, the talks are as good as off. If some other meaning is read into the ultimatum, then there could be problems. However, would the Pakistani Army and the Inter-Services Intelligence, which are behind terror arising from Pakistan, allow the civilian government of Nawaz Sharif to heed such ultimatum? All that can be known when the ultimatum details are out by the evening.
