IIT Admissions: Telugu students share dips from 20 % to 9%
Hyderabad, Oct 11: The two Telugu states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are among the top states that send more number of students to IITs but their share is decreasing year by year.
Telangana and Andhra Pradesh students secured 4,975 seats in IITs in 2014 but this year only 1,546 students from the Telugu states secured admission in IITs.
There are many reasons for this downward trend. Expansion of Hyderabad-based IIT coaching centres across the country is the main reason for the sharp decline. Earlier, students from all parts of the country joined IIT coaching institutes in Hyderabad.
Popular IIT academies Narayana and Chaitanaya set up IIT coaching centres in Karnataka, Kerala and Rajasthan. As a result students from other states are joining coaching centres which are nearer to them.
Rajasthan is the top sender to IITs this year. Of the 9,974 students who joined IITs this year, 1,965 are from Kota town in Rajasthan.
This year770 students from Telangana and 776 students from Andhra Pradesh secured seats in IITs. United AP students secured 20 per cent seats in IITs for a decade but this year AP and TS students secured only 9 per cent of IIT seats.
