Not enough rain water to fill Srisailam and Sagar reservoirs
Hyderabad, Sept 12: At the current rate at which rains are falling at various locations in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states, it could take over two weeks to fill up the Srisailam and Nagarjunsagar reservoirs, according to official sources. After continuous rainfall during the past five to six days in the two Telugu states, flood waters have touched the 818.3 feet height at the Srisailam reservoir as against the full water level of 885 feet. Sources said, every day about 50 thousand cusecs of flood waters are flowing into the Srisailam reservoir. At this rate, if rains continue to lash the various catchment areas in the two states, it could take upwards of 15 days to fill the reservoir. Sources also said that if the reservoir receives flood waters continuously for 10 days, only then water can be released from Srisailam to fill up Nagarjunsagar reservoir. Even though Karnataka had not released water from Almatti dam, Srisailam has been receiving flood waters through Tungabhadra river after rains lashed Kurnool and the AP-Karnataka border areas. Had these rains lashed the catchment areas up stream of the Godavari and Krishna rivers, by now all the irrigation projects in the two Telugu states would have been filled up.
