61 infants die at govt hospital in two weeks

Cuttack (Odisha), Sep 03: Sixty-one infants died within a span of two weeks at a Government Children's Hospital in Cuttack in Odisha. The incident sparked protest across the state and government ordered an inquiry into the incident. The government suspended five workers as a preliminary enquiry revealed that the staff neglected their duties and contributed to the deaths. The doctors blamed poor infrastructure for the deaths. Health Minister Atansu S Nayak said that criminal cases would be filed on three health staff. Congress and BJP leaders criticised Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for not visiting the hospital.
