Lok Sabha seats should be frozen at 543; otherwise it will become like Chinese Parliament: Chidambaram
New Delhi, Aug 12 : Congress MP P. Chidambaram on Wednesday said that the Lok Sabha seats should be frozen at 543, otherwise, it will become like the Chinese Parliament.

Speaking to reporters, Congress MP P. Chidambaram said, "The Lok Sabha should be frozen at 543. Otherwise, it will become like the Chinese Parliament. It will become a public meeting. It won't be a House. Be that as it may, the proportion of the southern state of Tamil Nadu is 7.18. The proportion of the southern states, including Tamil Nadu, should be frozen. They cannot be punished for implementing family planning."

Chidambaram further said that there is no need for the delimitation Bill.

Congress MP P. Chidambaram further said, "There is no need for that delimitation Bill. The existing representation of states must not be reduced. Why are we being punished? Why are the states which have faithfully and consensually implemented the family planning programme being punished."

He further reacted on police action against students during the 'Vidhan Sabha Gherao' march in Jharkhand and said, "On the Jharkhand issue, Mr. Rahul Gandhi and several others, including me, have condemned the police action. I said, shame on the police and their political masters. It should not have happened, but it has happened, and therefore we condemn it."

Meanwhile, student protests over alleged irregularities in the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) recruitment examinations continued for the 19th consecutive day in Ranchi on Wednesday, with protesters maintaining that candidates from both examinations have been facing problems for a prolonged period.

Another protester said a large number of people had joined the demonstration and expressed concern over the deteriorating health of students staying at the protest site.

“Many people have come, a lot of people have come here. Early in the morning, Babulal Marandi came here. A lot of discussions took place, and he spoke in front of the media about the students. So many people are sitting here, and their health is deteriorating,” the protester said.
