Woman dedicates life to save dogs

Beijing/Hyderabad, July 3: Everybody knows the special bond between humans and dogs. Many people love to have pet dogs in their house. But having a battalion of about 700 dogs is something out of our imagination. But it is true. A 66-year-old woman, Yang Xiaoyun is a great animal lover, especially dogs. All her life, her money, she spent to protect dogs from killing and to rear them. Till date, she spent about Rs 45 lakh and even sold out her two houses. Her son, unable to change her ways, left her. The undaunted woman is looking after 700 dogs in an open place and living there only in a make-shift tent. Every year she rescues hundreds of dogs at the famous Yulin 'dog meet festival'. Dog meet festival is a festival in China where thousands of dogs were killed to serve to the people. Yang was shocked to see the festival first time in 2013. Since then, she has been visiting the festival every year and rescuing dogs. She said the vendors will sell the dogs for a higher price to her than they will sell to the dog-eaters. Several animal lovers and animal protection organisations protested against the festival through social websites. The local government in Yulin said they banned the age-old festival after large scale protests from all over the world. But still the festival was held this year. Chinese believe eating dog meat will dispel evil spirits and even boosts men's sexual performance.
