A 'delicious' chapter closed permanently
New Delhi/Hyderabad, July 2: Former Prime Ministers late Morarji Desai and Rajiv Gandhi and famous singer late Mohammad Rafi were die-hard fans of jalebis of this sweet shop.
During festive season, police were summoned to control the sweet lovers who wait for their turn in long queues. The shop, so famous for its sweets and other items, was permanently closed on Wednesday night. A delicious chapter came to an end.
The history of Ghantewall sweet shop at Chandini Chowk in Old city goes back to history. The shop was opened in 1790 when emperor Shah Alam II of Moghul empire was ruling Delhi.
The shop owner, Sushant Jain was choked with emotion and said that it was very painful for them to close the shop that has been open for about 225 years. Their family members of eight generations have managed the shop. Sushant said dwindling sales have forced him to close the shop.
There were two Ghantewala sweet shops in Chandini Chowk earlier. The Ghantewala Shahi Halwa sweet shop near fountain shop was closed a few years ago. Another one beside the road in the same area was run by two brothers and one of them sold his share to Sushant Jain.
