India Clinch Thrilling 6-Wicket Victory Over England in First ODI
After a string of disappointing results and heavy criticism, Team India finally tasted victory as they defeated England by 6 wickets in the first ODI of the three-match series at Edgbaston on Tuesday. The win helped India take a 1-0 lead in the series.

Chasing a target of 259, India got off to a strong start with captain Shubman Gill scoring a fluent 80 before retiring hurt. However, early setbacks saw Rohit Sharma (11) and Virat Kohli (5) dismissed cheaply. Shreyas Iyer (35) provided some stability alongside Gill, but India slipped into trouble at 160/4 after Gill’s departure and quick wickets of Iyer and KL Rahul (1).

In a match-defining partnership, all-rounders Washington Sundar (52 not out) and Axar Patel (57 not out) rescued the innings with an unbeaten 102-run stand for the fifth wicket. The duo guided India to victory with 28 balls to spare, handing the team a much-needed morale boost.

Earlier, England, who elected to bat first after winning the toss, were bowled out for 258 in 47.5 overs. The hosts were reeling at 80/5 before Joe Root (76 not out) and Liam Dawson (68) forged a fighting recovery with half-centuries.

Axar Patel was the star with the ball too, picking up 4 wickets, while Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar claimed two wickets each for India.

This comprehensive all-round performance, especially from the middle-order all-rounders, has silenced some of the critics following India’s recent T20 struggles — including a loss to Ireland and a 0-4 whitewash against England.

The second ODI will be played in Cardiff on July 16.
