June 30 will be one second longer

Hyderabad, June 28: Gear up to add one extra second to your watches this Tuesday (June 30). Because this Tuesday will be a second longer than any other day of this year. But why this extra second? Normally a day will have 86,400 seconds, the time Earth takes to rotate around the Sun. This is according to the time standard, Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). NASA scientists say UTC is automatic time. The UTC is so accurate to one second in 1,400,000 years. Since the Earth's orbit is gradually slowing down a little bit due to the gravitational influence of Sun and Moon. To fill this deficit, one extra leap second has been added to the day, explained NASA. Normally, the clock would move from 23:59:59 to 00:00:00 the next day. But with the leap second on June 30, UTC will move from 23:59:59 to 23:59:60, and then to 00:00:00 on July 1. This is the fourth time to add extra leap second since the last 15 years till day. The correction was first made in 1972 when two leap seconds were added.
