Protests in Beldanga after migrant worker from Bengal thrashed in Jharkhand
Kolkata, Jan 17 : Protests erupted in Beldanga of West Bengal's Murshidabad district on Saturday after a migrant worker from the state was allegedly thrashed in Jharkhand.

Hundreds of people blocked the Barua More intersection, National Highway 12 and vandalised the railway gate near Beldanga station, disrupting train services.

Train services between Krishnanagar and Lalgola are currently suspended.

Eastern Railway General Manager (GM) Milind K. Deuskar said that they are sending additional forces (RPF, RPSF) from Kolkata to Beldanga to control the situation.

A large number of police personnel have also been deployed in Beldanga following reports of renewed tension.

Incidentally, the development unfolded on a day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Vande Bharat Sleeper train from neighbouring Malda district.

Notably, on Friday, hundreds of people took to the streets to protest in Beldanga against the alleged killing of a migrant worker from West Bengal in Jharkhand, demanding the swift arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible.

The protestors blocked the National Highway 12 and the railway line, inconveniencing thousands of passengers.

They also vandalised traffic kiosks and damaged police vehicles. At least 12 people were injured in stone pelting during the protests.

The deceased migrant worker was identified as Alauddin Sheikh (36), a resident of Sujarpur-Kamarpur village panchayat under Beldanga in Murshidabad district.

Sheikh's family members alleged that on Thursday morning, the news of his demise was received from Jharkhand.

Jharkhand Police informed the family that Sheikh's body was found hanging in his rented room.

However, the family members alleged that Jharkhand Police were trying to pass on the incident as a case of suicide; but they were sure that Sheikh was lynched first and then his body was hanged.

BJP Information Technology Cell chief and the party's central observer for West Bengal, Amit Malviya, had claimed that the "Beldanga tension is a clear indication of the collapse of the rule of law in West Bengal, with hooligans backed by the ruling Trinamool Congress enjoying a free ride."
