HC acquits Jaya in DA case, rules she can contest elections

Bangalore, May 11, 2015: In a big relief for TN former CM Jayalalitaa, the Karnataka high court on Monday struck down the sentence awarded to her in disproportionate assets case by the Bangalore trial court. The High Court said Jayalalitaa is not guilty in the disproportionate assets case. The apex court of Karnataka has acquitted her in the case. Striking down the trail court's sentence, single-judge bench Justice C.R. Kumaraswamy ruled that all charges, on which Jayalalithaa was convicted by the trial court, were not sustainable. The Judge ordered that there is no bar on her to become MLA or contest any election. The trail court of Bangalore sentenced her to 4 years imprisonment and imposed fine of Rs.100 Cr finding her guilty. The trial court verdict was now struck down by the High Court. As soon as the HC delivered its orders, Jayalalitaa supporters celebrated the verdict firing crackers. The High Court verdict also cleared the way for Jayalalitaa to become CM again.
