Virat in Controversy: Backlash Against Kohli for Sledging Young Player

A controversy has emerged around Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) star player Virat Kohli following a moment during the Qualifier 1 match against Punjab Kings (PBKS), held on Thursday at Mullanpur. The high-voltage encounter saw RCB cruise to victory and secure a place in the final, thanks to a commanding all-round performance.

However, an incident during the match has now drawn criticism towards Virat Kohli. During Punjab’s innings, young player Musheer Khan came in to bat as an Impact Player. At that point, Kohli allegedly made a mocking remark aimed at Musheer, saying, “The guy who was delivering water bottles is now out to bat.” Videos capturing Kohli’s gestures related to this remark have since gone viral on social media.

Just a few overs earlier, Musheer Khan had indeed been seen bringing water bottles to his teammates on the field. When Punjab's middle order collapsed, Musheer was sent in to bat as an Impact Player. In this context, Kohli’s comment appeared to belittle Musheer Khan for stepping into the batting role after serving drinks, triggering a backlash online.

Several fans expressed displeasure over Kohli’s behaviour, criticizing it as inappropriate for a player of his stature. They argued that instead of encouraging young players, Kohli’s sledging was demoralizing and uncalled for.

On the other hand, some RCB supporters attempted to defend Kohli. They reminded others that earlier in the IPL season, Virat Kohli had gifted one of his bats to Musheer Khan, suggesting there was no malicious intent behind the remark. Others dismissed the criticism, claiming that Kohli was merely playfully teasing Musheer Khan, whom they described as like a younger brother to him.
