YSR District Renamed as 'YSR Kadapa District' by Andhra Pradesh Government
The Andhra Pradesh government has officially issued a Government Order (GO) restoring the name of YSR District to "YSR Kadapa District". This decision aligns with a resolution made during a recent meeting of the state cabinet.
Originally, after the demise of former Chief Minister Dr. Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, the district of Kadapa was renamed "YSR Kadapa District" in his memory. However, following a change in government, the YSR Congress Party administration removed the word "Kadapa" and began referring to the district solely as "YSR District". This move drew significant opposition at the time from civil society groups, human rights organizations, and various political parties. Critics argued that removing the historical name "Kadapa" undermined the district’s identity.
During a past visit to the district, former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, then serving as the Leader of the Opposition, promised that if his party came to power, the original name would be reinstated. Recently, State Minister Satyakumar also addressed this issue in a letter to the Chief Minister, criticizing the earlier decision by former Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy to remove "Kadapa" from the district’s name.
With numerous public appeals supporting the name change, the government arrived at a clear consensus to revert the district’s name. Following the cabinet’s approval, the official order was issued, renaming the district as "YSR Kadapa District" once again.
