Central Government Issues Crucial Warning for Google Chrome Users
Many people immediately turn to the Google Chrome browser when they need information. However, the Government of India has issued a critical alert to users of this popular search engine’s browser, Google Chrome. In particular, it has urged those using Chrome on computers or laptops to take immediate action.
The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), a government agency, has identified serious security vulnerabilities in the Chrome browser. CERT-In has clarified that cybercriminals, or hackers, could exploit these vulnerabilities to steal valuable personal information and data from users' laptops.
According to CERT-In’s report, older versions of the Google Chrome browser contain flaws that could allow hackers to easily gain control over users’ computers. On systems running the Windows operating system, users who are operating versions older than 136.0.7103.114 are at risk. Similarly, for those using macOS or Linux, the vulnerabilities exist in versions earlier than 136.0.7103.113.
CERT-In has identified two primary bugs responsible for this security threat.
The first bug is CVE-2025-4664, which affects Chrome’s browser loader system by failing to implement it properly. Hackers could take advantage of this flaw to steal data from a user's computer through a specially designed website.
The second vulnerability is CVE-2025-4609, which resides in the Chrome Mojo component. This flaw creates handling issues, making it possible for hackers to infiltrate the user's system.
What Should Users Do to Stay Safe?
To protect themselves from these critical bugs, CERT-In has clearly recommended that users should ensure they are using the latest version of Google Chrome on their computers. This requires updating the browser.
To update the Chrome browser, users should first open Chrome on their computer. Then, they should click the three-dot (menu) icon located in the top-right corner. From the list of options that appears, select ‘Help’ followed by ‘About Google Chrome.’ Upon doing this, the browser will automatically update to the latest version. Experts advise that this simple step can help keep your data secure.
