India’s Destination Wedding Blow to Turkey: ₹770 Crore Loss
Turkey has received an unexpected setback from India amid rising diplomatic tensions between the two nations. In response to Turkey's perceived pro-Pakistan stance, particularly during the 'Operation Sindoor,' many Indians have initiated a boycott against the country. Experts estimate that this development could cost Turkey over 90 million dollars in lost revenue, particularly from the lucrative destination wedding industry.

In recent years, Turkey had emerged as a prime location for wealthy Indians planning weddings abroad. The historical palaces of Istanbul and its picturesque coastal areas have proven to be major attractions for Indian couples. While only 13 Indian weddings were held in Turkey in 2018, this number rose to 50 by last year.

Nikhil Mahajan, a senior representative of the prominent wedding planning firm Keystone Utsav, stated, "Destination weddings from India generate an average of 140 million dollars annually for Turkey's tourism sector."

On average, each wedding in Turkey costs around 3 million dollars (approximately ₹25 crore), and in some cases, expenses can rise to as much as 8 million dollars (around ₹68 crore). The presence of wedding guests, who often explore the local area, brings in additional tourism revenue.

However, Turkey's open support for Pakistan—accused of fostering cross-border terrorism—has caused significant anger among Indians. The public outrage intensified following Turkey’s comments during 'Operation Sindoor,' leading to widespread calls for a boycott under the slogan ‘Boycott Turkey.’ Reports indicate that nearly 2,000 Indian tourists have already cancelled their trips to Turkey. Of the roughly 30 Indian couples who had planned to get married in Turkey this year, many are now exploring alternative venues due to the ongoing tensions.

Experts predict that as a result of these cancellations and changing plans, Turkey may lose approximately 90 million dollars, equivalent to around ₹770 crore in Indian currency.

This boycott has extended beyond tourism and weddings. Indian business sectors are also gradually reducing their engagements with Turkish companies. Traders dealing in fruits and jewellery have reportedly decided to halt imports from Turkey. The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has issued a call urging Indian businesses to refrain from establishing or maintaining trade relations with Turkish companies.
