Rohit Sharma Reveals Shocking Reason Behind His T20 Retirement

Rohit Sharma, who led India to a historic victory in the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup and ended the nation's 17-year-long wait for an ICC trophy, has now disclosed the surprising reasoning behind his retirement from T20 internationals. India triumphed over South Africa in a thrilling final to claim the championship. Following the match, Virat Kohli, who delivered a stellar performance in the final, announced his retirement from the T20 format. Rohit Sharma also bid farewell to T20 internationals during the post-match press conference. The very next day, Ravindra Jadeja too declared his retirement from the format.

Nearly a year after this achievement, Rohit Sharma shared interesting details during an interview with a YouTube channel. He stated that he would have retired from T20 internationals regardless of the World Cup outcome. “When I announced my retirement from T20s, I would have done so even if we hadn't won the T20 World Cup. Because continuing further would not have been right. It’s important to give opportunities to others. But after winning, you feel that you still have what it takes, that you are performing well, and delivering results. So the question arises—why not continue?” Rohit said.

He elaborated further, “This position was not earned easily. I worked very hard for it. I know what I have done in my life to achieve this and the kind of situations I faced. I have an awareness of all those things. So then why give it up? When you’re batting well and achieving results, why walk away from it?”

Future Plans and Leadership Duties
At 38 years old, Rohit Sharma has retired from Test cricket but continues to serve in the One Day International (ODI) format. There is a strong possibility he will lead India until the 2027 ODI World Cup. Under his leadership, India won the 2025 Champions Trophy and advanced to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup before being defeated by Australia. With his retirement from Test cricket, the responsibility of appointing a new captain for the Indian Test team now lies with the selection committee. Clarity on this matter is expected in the near future.
