Next CBI Chief: Rahul Gandhi Attends Crucial Meeting at Prime Minister’s Office
The process to select the next Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has officially commenced, with a high-level committee meeting underway. Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, arrived at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) a short while ago to attend this crucial meeting.
According to the established procedure, the power to appoint the CBI Director lies with a three-member committee. The committee is chaired by the Prime Minister and includes the Chief Justice of India and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha as members. This committee is now meeting to finalize the candidate for the next CBI Chief.
The tenure of a CBI Director is typically two years. However, under special circumstances, this period can be extended up to five years as permitted by law. The current CBI Director, Praveen Sood, is set to complete his term on May 25.
Praveen Sood is a 1986 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the Karnataka cadre. He previously served as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Karnataka. He assumed charge as the CBI Director in May 2023, succeeding Subodh Kumar Jaiswal. As his tenure nears completion, the committee has convened to select his successor. There is widespread anticipation regarding which candidate will be confirmed in this meeting.
