A Rare Honor for a Transgender: For the First Time in Telangana State!
Khammam District, September 5: In an inspiring development, a transgender individual named Ruth Janpal Koyala has achieved a significant milestone by securing a seat for postgraduate studies in medicine. Ruth Janpal, who works as a doctor at Osmania Hospital, has become the first transgender person to attain this opportunity.
Hailing from Khammam, Ruth Janpal graduated from Mallareddy Institute of Medical College in 2018. Despite facing rejection from various hospitals due to her transgender identity, she remained determined to fight for her rights. Ruth Janpal took her case to court, seeking equal treatment for transgender individuals.
The Chief Justice of the High Court, referencing a judgment by the Supreme Court, issued an interim order that highlighted the importance of providing employment and education opportunities for transgenders. This decision paved the way for Ruth Janpal's pursuit of postgraduate education in medicine.
Expressing her aspirations, Ruth Janpal emphasized that she should be granted an opportunity for postgraduate studies in medicine across India. She also advocated for a seat within the Scheduled Caste (SC) transgender quota, specifically in her preferred department at the state level.
While the Telangana government initially allotted a postgraduate seat in the female SC category, Ruth Janpal secured a place in the MD (Doctor of Medicine) program at ESI Hospital's Emergency Department. The accomplishment drew recognition from various quarters, including Khammam District Collector VP Gautam.
Looking ahead, Ruth Janpal's journey continues as she prepares to complete her postgraduate studies. She has been promised a job opportunity at Khammam Government Hospital upon the completion of her studies.
