Telangana government files petition against governor in Supreme Court

Hyderabad: The Telangana government filed a special leave petition in the Supreme Court against Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan for not giving her assent to ten government bills. The state government has requested that the apex court direct the governor to provide her assent to the pending bills. The case is expected to be heard on Friday. The Telangana government's petition stated that the state is facing a constitutional impasse due to the governor's refusal to act on several bills passed by the state legislature. These bills have been pending since September 2022, and the government has made the Secretary to the Governor a respondent in the case. The bills pending with Raj Bhavan include The "Telangana State Private Universities (Establishment and Regulation) (Amendment) Bill, 2022, which is crucial for the state's plan to recruit approximately 2,000 lecturers in various universities. The state government argued that the Constitution cannot be kept static in the matter of legislative actions, and pending bills without legitimate reasons result in chaotic situations that create lawlessness. The government urged the governor to discharge her constitutional mandate of assenting to the bills, as all of the bills conform to the constitutional mandate.
