Pre-packaged consumer goods and food items will begin to include an additional 5% GST today. On Sunday, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs issued a directive raising the GST on pre-packaged consumer goods weighing up to 25 kgs by 5%. After the tax was implemented, pre-packaged items like wheat, rice, buttermilk, lassi, curd, paneer, and other necessities of everyday life became more expensive. Any increase in GST rates, according to finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, is meant to make up for value chain shortcomings. Things that cost more include packaged food items, hotel rooms, and LED lights. Numerous products have also grown more affordable. The opposition, though, is furious about the GST rate increase. Rahul Gandhi, a member of Parliament of Congress, described the GST as 'Gabbar Singh Tax'.
