An Australian legislator came forward on Thursday to present claims of sexual misconduct that occurred within the nation's parliament, highlighting the building's unfavorable safety conditions for women. Lidia Thorpe, an independent senator, delivered an emotional address to the Senate, recounting her own distressing experiences. She detailed episodes of receiving sexually suggestive remarks, being trapped in a stairwell, subjected to unsolicited physical contact, and propositioned by influential men. On Wednesday, Thorpe made startling accusations against a fellow senator whom she alleged had sexually assaulted her. The allegations were reiterated on Thursday, with Thorpe directing them specifically at conservative Senator David Van, who has fervently rejected these assertions. Responding to the allegations, Van expressed deep distress. He communicated to local press that the allegations left him "shattered and battered," categorically dismissing them as completely baseless. Amid the unfolding controversy, Van was suspended by his political party, the Liberals, on Thursday.
