A major dam collapse in Russian-held Ukraine has triggered a mass evacuation of thousands of people downstream. President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed grave concerns, stating that approximately 80 towns and villages are at risk of being flooded following the destruction of the dam at Nova Kakhovka. The president squarely places the blame on Russia for the devastating incident. The collapse of the dam has unleashed a torrent of water down the Dnipro river, posing an imminent and catastrophic flooding threat to the city of Kherson. Despite Russia's control over the dam, officials from the country vehemently deny any involvement, instead attributing the disaster to Ukrainian shelling. The Kakhovka dam, situated downstream from the extensive Kakhovka reservoir, holds vital importance for the region. It serves as a crucial water source for farmers, residents, and the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. Additionally, it facilitates the transportation of water south to the Russian-occupied Crimea.
