Mumbai: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) made an important announcement on Friday regarding the Rs 2,000 denomination banknotes, stating that they will be withdrawn from circulation. However, the bank clarified that the Rs 2,000 notes will continue to be recognized as legal tender. The decision to introduce the Rs 2,000 banknotes was made in November 2016 to meet the immediate currency requirements of the economy after the withdrawal of the 500 and 1,000 banknotes, which had lost their legal tender status. According to the RBI's statement, all banks are mandated to provide deposit and/or exchange facilities for the Rs 2,000 banknotes until September 30, 2023. The central bank also highlighted that the Rs 2,000 banknotes are not commonly used for transactions, and there is an ample supply of banknotes in other denominations to meet the public's currency needs.
