According to Dr. Paramjit Singh, the ART Center Incharge at Sushila Tiwari Hospital, 44 prisoners in Haldwani jail have tested positive for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Additionally, one female prisoner has also been diagnosed with the virus. The increasing number of HIV-positive inmates has caused concern for the jail administration. Dr. Singh stated that an ART center has been established to treat the infected prisoners. His team is consistently monitoring and examining the prisoners to ensure they receive the proper care. The infected inmates are given free treatment and medications based on the guidelines set forth by the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO). As a result of the high number of positive cases, routine check-ups are being conducted on all prisoners to detect and treat HIV-infected prisoners in a timely manner.
