Sinkhole swallows classroom, 17 students injured
A group of 17 primary school children in Zimbabwe were injured after a large sinkhole developed underneath their classroom, potentially caused by nearby mining activities. The school, located in the city of Kwekwe and situated close to two gold mines, had previously complained about illegal mining activity underneath its grounds.
One of the children was seriously hurt, and pictures posted on social media showed a gaping hole under the classroom floor, which had swallowed desks, chairs and school bags. The school has been closed and authorities are attempting to find alternative accommodation for the students.
