On the banks of the River Oder, tonnes of dead fish have been seen drifting or washing ashore. After a large fish die-off in the Oder River, laboratory examinations found high salinity levels but no mercury contamination of the river's waters, contrary to what certain German media had reported. The mystery surrounding what killed tonnes of fish in Central Europe remained, according to Poland's environment minister. According to Poland's interior minister, anyone who assists in finding those responsible for the river's pollution would receive a reward of 1 million zlotys ($220,000). On the German side, hundreds of volunteers were helping to gather dead fish.
