On Thursday, numerous BJP ministers, including Nirmala Sitharaman and Smriti Irani, protested against Congress Lok Sabha MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury over his 'Rastrapatni' comments on recently-elected President Droupadi Murmu, which sparked a significant argument in the House of Representatives. On the floor of the Lok Sabha today, Irani confronted Sonia Gandhi, the interim president of the Congress, and rebuked her for having consented of Droupadi Murmu's humiliation. She has alleged that an insult against a woman in the highest constitutional position was sanctioned by Sonia ji. Nirmala Sitharaman, the finance minister, demanded that the Congress President apologise on behalf of the party in the Lok Sabha, calling it a deliberate se*ist slur. In her response to the entire situation, Sonia Gandhi stated that Chowdhury had already expressed regret for his statements. Chowdhury, however, clarified not to apologise for a slip of tongue.
