Google Warns That AI Poses an Inevitable Threat to Humanity
Concerns that artificial intelligence (AI), which is advancing rapidly each day, could eventually become a threat to the very survival of humanity have been circulating for a long time. A recent study indicates that these fears may soon materialize. In its latest research paper, Google DeepMind has presented detailed findings on the potential dangers posed by AI.
According to the report, AI is expected to evolve significantly by the year 2030, transforming into Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). This advanced form of AI is projected to surpass human capabilities, overcoming the current limitations of existing AI systems. DeepMind stated that AGI would not only attain human-level intelligence but also function alongside humans in an equivalent capacity.
The research raised alarm over the potential existential threat that this technological evolution may pose to humanity. DeepMind CEO and Co-founder Shane Legg stated, “We estimate that AGI carries a serious risk of causing harm to humanity.” However, he did not disclose specific details regarding the nature of this threat or how exactly it could jeopardize human survival.
Shane Legg explained that the focus of their research is on keeping AI under control and preventing potential dangers through in-depth studies. He emphasized the importance of proactive measures to prevent AI misuse and the necessity of safeguarding it from being exploited to harm others.
According to the details outlined in DeepMind’s research paper, there are several avenues through which AGI may cause harm, including misuse, misalignment, mistakes, and structural risks. The report stressed the need for developers to build safety protocols to mitigate these threats. It also recommended that AGI’s capabilities be restricted in areas where there is potential for harm to humans.
