Mother of Whistleblower Suchir Balaji Alleges OpenAI's Involvement in His Death
Suchir Balaji, of Indian origin, was found dead under suspicious circumstances in his San Francisco apartment on November 26 of last year. The incident came to light much later, with local police ruling it a suicide. However, Purnima Rao has launched a legal battle challenging this conclusion, claiming inconsistencies in the investigation.
A second post-mortem conducted following her efforts reportedly contradicted the initial findings. Purnima pointed to troubling evidence, including signs of a struggle in the apartment, bloodstains, and theft of valuables, suggesting foul play. She expressed doubts about the transparency of the investigation, stating that authorities concluded it was a suicide within just 14 minutes.
Adding weight to her claims, Purnima noted that her son had celebrated his birthday just a day before his death. "If he intended to take his life, why would he celebrate his birthday?" she questioned. She also claimed that crucial documents belonging to Suchir were missing after his death, and alleged that OpenAI’s interests in suppressing sensitive information might have led to his murder.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk, known for his criticism of OpenAI, shared Purnima’s interview on X (formerly Twitter), expressing skepticism about the suicide theory.
Despite these claims, legal challenges remain, with lawyers reportedly hesitant to pursue the case as a potential murder. Purnima lamented the lack of witnesses willing to come forward, suggesting a climate of fear around the case.
