Hoisting the national flag at home: Rules to follow, dos and don'ts

Hyderabad: As part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Central government has made it clear that tricolour flag should be hoisted on every house. To this extent, national flags are also being distributed from house to house. An action plan has been formulated to celebrate the national festival grandly. But, there are certain rules for hoisting the national flag or using the tricolour in any other way.

The provisions of the Flag Code 2002 shall be followed while using the national flag. If the flag code is violated in the way of using the flag, punishments and fines will be imposed as per the law. Insulting or disrespecting the national flag against the rules is punishable with up to three years in jail and a fine.

Rules to follow; dos and don’ts

The national flag should be treated with the utmost respect. Torn, crumbled or old flags should not be used for hoisting under no circumstances. There should be no other colours or inscriptions except the three colours and the Ashoka Chakra. Saffron should be on the top and green on the bottom. Saffron should be on the left side when displayed vertically. Under no circumstances should an inverted flag be flown.

No other flags should be equal to or taller than the tricolour flag during the hoisting of the flag. The national flag should not be disrespectfully thrown on the ground. The national flag should not be used as a decoration.

In public meetings and gatherings, the flag should be kept on the right side of the stage (to the left of the audience) only. No decorations or flowers should be placed on the flag. Flowers can be used in the centre of the flag. The flag should not be draped over objects and buildings. Finally, should not sewn as a garment.
