Another Shock to Pakistan from India: Water Supply Halted from Baglihar Dam
Following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Pakistan has faced yet another setback from India. With mounting retaliatory measures, India has intensified pressure on its neighbor through strict actions. After already suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, India has now halted the supply of water from the Baglihar Dam to Pakistan, marking the second major step aimed at cornering the neighboring country.
Officials lowered the sluice spillway gates at the Baglihar Dam, effectively stopping the flow of water. As a result, water supply from this dam to Pakistan’s Punjab Province has been disrupted. However, authorities have stated that this is a temporary measure. They added that the action serves as a clear message that India is capable of taking stricter steps if necessary.
The Baglihar Dam, which was constructed on the Chenab River in 2008, generates 900 megawatts of hydroelectric power. The dam is approximately 145 meters in length. Under the Indus Waters Treaty, the Chenab River is one of the rivers from which Pakistan received a significant share of water. Agricultural lands in Pakistan’s Punjab Province rely heavily on water from this river.
It may be recalled that India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty on April 26 following the brutal terror attack in Pahalgam. Since then, India has been taking coordinated measures from all fronts to isolate Pakistan.
