AP govt modifies name of Konaseema district as B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema district

Amaravati, May 18: Respecting the sentiments of people, the Andhra Pradesh government has decided to modify the name of Konaseema district as B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema district. In this regard, a preliminary notification is expected either on Thursday or Friday.

When Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy was Leader of the Opposition during the TDP rule from 2014 to 2019, he promised to make existing 13 districts to 26. As promised, he bifurcated districts after the YSRCP came to power. The combined East Godavari district was made into three districts. One of the districts was named as Konaseema district with seven Assembly constituencies.

However, people’s organisations and political parties have submitted memoranda to MLAs and ministers requesting to modify the name of Konaseema district as B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema district. Officials said that the decision was taken after several deliberations with stakeholders. There were requests from various quarters asking to rename a few newly formed districts in the state.
