MS Dhoni Set to Break His Own Record as Captain

MS Dhoni, the Chennai Super Kings player, is poised to set a new record today by captaining in the Indian Premier League at the oldest age in the tournament's history. With current captain Ruturaj Gaikwad sidelined due to an elbow injury, Dhoni will take charge as captain for the remainder of the season. Head coach Stephen Fleming confirmed that Dhoni will lead the team in today’s match against Kolkata Knight Riders.

Ruturaj Gaikwad’s absence is seen as a significant setback for Chennai Super Kings, who have already lost four out of their five matches in the tournament and currently occupy the 9th position in the points table. Gaikwad sustained an injury during the match against Rajasthan Royals held in Guwahati on March 30. According to Fleming, scans revealed a minor fracture in his elbow. Despite attempts to return for the upcoming matches, Gaikwad was ultimately unable to recover in time. Fleming stated that Gaikwad is effectively out of the tournament, and MS Dhoni will lead the team in the remaining fixtures.

Should Dhoni captain in today’s match, he will set a new milestone in IPL history. At the age of 43 years and 278 days, he will become the oldest captain ever to lead a team in the Indian Premier League. Previously, Dhoni himself held this record, having captained Chennai Super Kings in the 2023 final against Gujarat Titans at the age of 41 years and 325 days. With today’s appearance as captain, Dhoni will surpass his own benchmark and establish a new record.
